This was a lost & forgotten tune until the New Americans revived it in late 2005. I had only performed it a few times solo acoustic after I wrote it in the summer of 1996. I had been dating a young woman for awhile and wrote this song on an actual road trip up from LA back home to Berkeley. Shortly thereafter I had her over for dinner. I had prepared what I thought was a fantastic romantic night: homemade sauce for pasta, wine, delicious salad, etc. At every turn this woman picked holes in my perfect evening. "What, no bread?" she asked. "No grapefruit juice for a greyhound?" I tried to roll with the punches and thought I was doing well until later in the evening she asked me to play her a song. Feeling bold, I pulled out my beloved Moserite and played her "Another Road Song" which I had just written for her. What I got was the worst of all responses: none whatsoever. She just kinda shrugged and left soon thereafter. We dated once or twice more, but it was doomed. I was so hurt that this song had no effect that it just got shelved. In retrospect, it's her loss, because I think it's really a great little song. This version sparkles so much because of Angela's violin and Mike's lap steel. Their sounds make this a prime example of what I like to call "California Country."
Lyrics
Chorus:
Just another road song
June is fading
What’s a lost boy to do?
I got Highway One
And a setting Sun
Reflecting off the Pacific’s blue
My eyes are on the view
But I’m thinking of you
I got the sun in Santa Barbara
Just a-lazing in the sand
I had fun in Ventura
Jammin’ with a country band
Stopped in San Louis Obispo
Just to fill my tank
Walked the pier in San Simeon
Where an old freighter sank
Chorus
Caught some more rays in Cambria
Wet my toes in the sand
Cruised the curves so carefully
Watched the sculpture of the land
Caught in traffic in Carmel
Watched the fog roll slowly in
Drove right through Monterey
But it wasn’t any sin
Now I roam this boardwalk
Roller coaster screams and laughing teens
Took off my shoes and socks
The water’s cold, but I’m feeling bold
I’ll jump right in and take a swim
But my dear, I wish you were here!
Just another road song
June is fading
What’s a lost boy to do
I got Highway One
And a setting Sun
Reflecting off the Pacific’s blue
My eyes are on the view
But my heart’s beating for you
