live once with the band before being shelved. His keyboards and electric guitar pushed the arrangement into entirely new territory. After rebuilding the drum track and adding new vocals — including Olive’s harmonies — the result may be the finest track I’ve released to date.

The title phrase had been in my head for years. When I later transferred the session into Pro Tools and began developing it in earnest, I sent what I had to my brother Jimi with the simple instruction: “Go nuts!”

He did. His keyboards and electric guitar pushed the arrangement into entirely new territory. After rebuilding the drum track and adding new vocals — including Olive’s harmonies — the result may be the finest track I’ve released to date.

The title phrase had been in my head for years. Its multiple meanings invite the listener to wonder: is this about one man…or three? What do you hear?

The band’s been digging into this one in rehearsal and it’s already taken on a life of its own. To begin: yes, there really was a “Kenna” who died in a car crash with her mother. But the Kenna who lives in this song is a composite character.

The opening preserves the emotional truth of that sudden, unexplained recollection of someone close who’s gone — but to honor her family, and for other narrative reasons, I knew it wouldn’t work to tell her actual story. In the VC song-sphere, it made more sense for the loss to be a romantic one.

What you hear is essentially what I first recorded. Because my live vocal sometimes sounded as though it were already using auto-tune, I experimented with it subtly in the studio. It’s the only track I’ve released featuring just voice and guitar — the starkness of the arrangement matching the tone of the song. The band was disintegrating, but I was still doing duo shows with Olive and knew this would be perfect for that setting.

Somehow it came to sum up the entire theme of the EP while also reflecting my own philosophy for navigating the loss I’d experienced over the previous two years. After losing two siblings — and watching my entire band quit — I had to ground myself in what’s always gotten me through hard times: accepting the impermanence of all things, while holding what and who you love as closely as you can.

I worked closely with my brother Jimi on his keyboard parts, asking him to play both what I heard in my head and ideas that were quintessentially his own on two of his vintage instruments. The result is a blend of pure Americana with a hint of Fleetwood Mac — a combination I find deeply satisfying.

I’ll be closing all my shows with this song in 2026.

VC: acoustic guitars; acoustic bass; drum programming
Jimi Furia: Wurlitzer electric piano; Hammond B-3 organ
Olive Pants: harmony vocals

Everybody Leaves

Easy to believe that someone loves you
When they say the magic words like “I do”
Easy to believe that some things will never end
That the bond is really real and not just pretend

But everybody leaves, everything goes away
Leaving nothing but memories behind
Everybody leaves, nothing really lasts
So it’s best to live your life with that in mind

When you realize that everybody leaves
It can puncture your heart and torture your soul
But that’s the way it is; it’s the only life we have
It’s best to let go of what we can’t control

Everybody leaves...

But don’t for a moment think that I’m not holding on tight
To the ones I love and helping their light shine bright
I’ll fight…tonight…to make everything all right

The memories I have of those who’ve gone away
Come into my mind at the strangest times
Better to love and lose than to never love
It gives a life its meaning and the verse its rhymes

But everybody leaves, everything goes away
Leaving nothing but memories behind
Everybody leaves, nothing really lasts
So it’s best to live your life with that in mind
With that in mind…keep that in mind

["GET
